About

PAUL SCERRI

Paul Scerri, an artist known for his brevity, demonstrates a talent for generating intrigue through his work. With a delicate touch, he imbues stereotypical characters with notions of injustice and narcissism. His sculptures encourage individual interpretations, as he states, “the character of my work has effectively made a full circle since, from the figurative, I moved to abstract ceramic creation and have now turned back to figurative work.” This evolution in his art showcases a return to the figurative, following a period of abstract ceramic creation. Paul Scerri has been on an artistic journey for over four decades, beginning in the 1970s. He received professional training from Esprit Barthet and was granted scholarships in Italy, including at the Accademia Belle Arti Pietro Vanucci of Perugia and the Istituto Statale D’Arte G. Ballardini in Faenza. It was during this period that he developed a passion for working with clay. He furthered his knowledge in the design and decoration of ceramic tiles by completing his studies in Imola. Notably, Paul won first prize in Ceramics at the ‘1° Concorso Avis’ in Faenza, which marked a pivotal moment in his Italian experience. Upon returning to Malta, he taught at the Art and Design Centre in Valletta before transitioning to the private sector, where he was responsible for designing and producing industrial ceramics. He kept his skills up-to-date by attending various workshops in Spain and Italy. Today, Paul Scerri is a part-time lecturer in ceramics at the Faculty of Education within the University of Malta, continuing to share his expertise with others.
