Medium: Plaster casts on recycled wood panel

Size: 45x36x7cm

Year: 2020

Artwork Description: A reverential honour to the humble Prickly Pear which is so much unappreciated for its significance in Malta’s environmental landscape and traditional use. Over the last few decades, we have seen the fruit being used to produce jams, alcoholic drinks and other derivatives. But other potential uses locally as an edible substitute or for natural health cures are mostly unexplored. With the excessive uncontrolled development that is taking place, even this robust tree is feeling the effects of greed and is slowly being wiped out from the village cores. Thankfully, it is still prevalent in rural areas, providing boundary and security protection between parcels of land, as well as shelter from winds.

About

LAWRENCE PAVIA

Lawrence started practicing art in his thirties but only took art seriously when he joined a University of Malta course in 2006 under the tutorship of Prof. Giuseppe Schembri Bonaci. He also attended art sessions at Harry Alden and Anthony Calleja. His motivation in art is mainly inspired by nature and the world that surrounds us, and is sensitive to its preservation or lack of it. His local landscapes and streetscapes in a hard-edge style are recognisable by the vibrant colours used throughout. Over the last few years, he has also produced a series of works using prickly pears and leaves which he calls ‘BajtARTax-xewk’ works, in response to the deteriorating environmental situation in the Maltese Islands. His works include portraits in pop art style, lino-prints and objet trouvé.
