Artwork Description: After long centuries, women are still struggling for equality and against oppression. Although some battles have been won, women, in some cultures more than others, are still affected by all forms of discrimination in every aspect of life. One facet of this problem is that society still places a lot of value on the importance of female sexiness. Sex sells. While many women struggle to make it to positions and trades historically dominated by men, social media continues to promote what sells; the superficial and the aesthetic, with the underlying message that for a woman to “make it”, she must do away with her brains and choose to be pretty and compliant instead. But does a woman have to undress to get noticed? When art is not created simply for aesthetic admiration, it instigates questions about the social and political landscape, and through this communication and questioning, art can affect the world and bring a change toward equality.
