RING (ROSE THORNS)

RING (ROSE THORNS)

AARON BEZZINA

Medium: Brass and gold

Size: 25x25x1cm

Year: 2023

Artwork Description: Ring (Rose Thorns) is the start of a new body of work deriving from nature. The successor of an earlier series where Opuntia ficus-indica cladodes were used for sculpture, now rose thorns are assembled on circumferences then cast. The circle has various meanings and when it is encrusted in thorns, it gains Catholic references which are inevitable within the confines of Malta. Yet, this golden ring could also symbolise the sun with its rays emitting outwards, which is also a symbol most associated with the Maltese islands. Roses usually last up to one week after being plucked and this is when the blooms are enjoyed the most. This work will give importance and longevity to its lesser appreciated stem and its protrusions.

About

AARON BEZZINA

Aaron Bezzina first exhibited as an artist in 2012 in Malta and since then, he has consistently shown work both locally and abroad. In 2015, whilst reading for an MFA in Digital Arts at the University of Malta, he was selected for a residency organised by the European Investment Bank in Luxembourg, where he was mentored by Darren Almond, a Turner prize nominated artist. In 2017, he was also one of the selected artists for the Maltese Pavilion at Venice Biennale, the exhibition entitled ‘Homo Melitensis: An Incomplete inventory in 19 Chapters’, curated by Raphael Vella and Bettina Hutschek. Following this exposure, his work was scouted by officials from Imago Mundi, an exhibition organised by the Luciano Benetton Collection in Treviso. This also led to a six-month project in Treviso and Quero-Vas, in Italy, as Aaron was selected for RigenerArte organised by UNIC&F and the Luciano Benetton Collection. Moreover, Aaron has also been selected for residencies in Lithuania and Athens by local organisations. In 2021, despite the social restrictions due to COVID-19, Aaron was selected for UN/MUTE - a New York virtual artist residency, selected by Arts Council Malta in New York - as the artist representing Malta. An installation for this project was eventually exhibited in the Austrian Cultural Forum NY in Manhattan.
