JOSEPH AGIUS

Medium: Stoneware ceramics

Size: 58cm x 14cm (radius)

Year: 2024

Artwork Description: This sculpture's textured surface and dynamic, swirling form evoke the natural energy and motion of seascapes. Its ridged, layered appearance might symbolize the undulating waves of the ocean or the geological formations shaped by the relentless pounding of the sea over time. The material and its weathered, almost aquatic finish further enhance its connection to marine landscapes, suggesting a harmony between the raw power of nature and the enduring beauty it creates. It could be seen as a representation of the sea's transformative ability to sculpt the world around it.

About

JOSEPH AGIUS

Joseph Agius, a senior staff nurse at FairyLand ward for the past 30 years, started out as a hobbyist in ceramic sculpture and is now established as one of Malta’s foremost ceramists. His profession as a nurse exposes him to a world whose fabric can include pain, disease, despair, and death. World news is also a source of inspiration. Thus he tends to favour a social neo-realist aesthetic. Joseph chooses linguistic metaphors and figures of speech as springboards for his creations, so the titles of his works have a metaphorical origin which he subsequently interprets as a narrative in clay.
