FOUR SHADES OF BLUE BAJTAR

FOUR SHADES OF BLUE BAJTAR

LAWRENCE PAVIA

Medium: Plaster cast and acrylic on recycled wood panel

Size: 60x20x7cm

Year: 2023

Artwork Description: This work is one in the series giving homage to the prickly pear which I have been exploring over the last decade or so. It is intended to give reverence and tribute to the humble prickly pear which although not truly endemic to the Maltese islands, have taken root everywhere over the many centuries and we can now say it is part of our rural environment and heritage. So much so that we tend to simply ignore the prickly pear trees completely - leaving them unobserved, uncared for and without any regard for this robust tree and its delicious fruit. In an effort to get them noticed, I present the modest and unpretentious prickly pear in an unnatural colour, in the hope that it will be given its deserved attention

About

LAWRENCE PAVIA

Lawrence started practicing art in his thirties but only took art seriously when he joined a University of Malta course in 2006 under the tutorship of Prof. Giuseppe Schembri Bonaci. He also attended art sessions at Harry Alden and Anthony Calleja. His motivation in art is mainly inspired by nature and the world that surrounds us, and is sensitive to its preservation or lack of. His local landscapes and streetscapes in a hard-edge style are recognisable by the vibrant colours used throughout. Over the last few years, he has also produced a series of works using prickly pears and leaves which he calls BajtARTax-xewk works, in response to the deteriorating environmental situation in the Maltese islands. His works include portraits in pop art style, lino prints, and objet trouvé
