David Calleja (b. 1979, Malta) mainly works with three-dimensional metal sculptures. Calleja developed a fascination for form at an early age. He was intrigued by the numerous characteristics that constitute his native island. These elements feature in his current creations and influence his laborious method. Calleja’s artistic search focuses on the multi-layered aspect of his terrain. He is drawn to experimentation, especially with particular techniques that merge the traditional hammering of a blacksmith with more contemporary techniques in metal art. His dedication to the applied arts reveals a passion that conceals a preserved energy. Calleja’s artworks interact with the surrounding space, creating an interesting dynamic dialogue with the context. For several years, Calleja has worked with various fabrications and his inclination toward this aspect has gradually developed and features explicitly in his present work.
