About

Mario Abela

Mario Abela is a self-taught, multidisciplinary artist working in drawing, painting, collage, video and sound. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education - Art and History, and a Masters in Fine Arts – Digital Arts (University of Malta). He is also a senior lecturer at MCAST Institute for the Creative Arts, lecturing in Graphic Design, Interactive Media, and Gaming. His existentialism beliefs can be clearly seen in his work, in the depiction of godless and absurd worlds in the age of the Anthropocene. The works are created to target the spectator’s emotions; the play be- tween the thin line that separates tranquillity and havoc, the beautiful and the ugly. Ghosts from the past and monsters from the future, meet inside his compositions as if they are discussing the present. Through a juxtaposition of images and chance during execution, what starts as storytelling, becomes an exploration into fantastic worlds.
