About

Kane Cali

Kane Cali is an experimentalist and artist, with no defined path except for an acute fascination with the malleability of data. Data acts like pigment, a dilutable point of origin from which he instinctively manipulates through the use of both software and hardware interfaces. This digital digestion has, so far, taken form in print, glass, stone, and various other materials as well as moving image. Having completed an MA in Ceramics and Glass (Royal College of Art), he has since exhibited internationally, namely in Milan, London, Denmark and Shanghai and is currently based in Malta. The KaneCali Studio provides facilities catering for cast glass works and mixed media, and aims to merge the use of cutting edge technologies with that of the traditional. The Pastizzi Project started in 2017 as a means to democratise and demystify contemporary art within Malta, and create art work familiar and within reach to all social demographics. The iconic Pastizzi serves as a vessel to bridge Maltese contemporary identity and social narratives sculptural satire - a playful object with many stories to tell. Each incarnation over the years has seen the pastizzi go from hand-sized sculptural pieces, through to jewellery in silver and precious metals and stones, to an oversized wall-hung sculpture, and more recently, virtual NFT based works. Each rendition sheds light on the importance of cultural identity through local cuisine, the increasing health risks associated with the western diet, conspicuous consumption, and more recently, toxic masculinity and its misogynistic attitude towards women. Ultimately The Pastizzi Project serves as a reflective satirical tool that attaches itself to both local and international narratives.
