Cubozoa (Box Jellyfish)

Cubozoa (Box Jellyfish)

George Muscat

Medium: Stoneware fired ceramic and recycled glass. Hand thrown plate.

Size: 57 cm diameter

Year: 2021

Artwork Description: This work is inspired by the box jellyfish which invade shores during the hot season. Whilst most people fear these and other specimen of jellyfish, the artist sees in them a special kind of elegance in the way they migrate within the currents of the seas, in their beautiful colours and shape which then he tries to emulate in this ceramic work. Their transparency when hit by the sun light is reflected in the glazes which Muscat envisions in this work.

About

George Muscat

George Muscat was tutored by Gabriel Caruana and attended various international courses related to throwing and glaze techniques. His creations represent the mysteries of the world and the environment around us. Whilst opening a world into his own soul, he completely seduces the viewer with a curiosity that feels unreal in the environment we live in, today. Muscat’s works form an important part of many private collections in Malta and abroad, apart from a number of publicly displayed works. Apart from nine solo exhibitions and his participation in several collectives locally and abroad, he has been instrumental in setting up the Malta Raku Association and introduced the raku technique at MCAST Art and Design Centre, where he taught ceramics for over 12 years.
