Hope or Despair

Catherine Cavallo

Medium: Acrylic on paper

Size: 70 cm x 60 cm

Year: 2020

Artwork Description: This piece is a product of the pandemic, specifically, Cavallo’s reaction to it. It’s about feeling confined, imprisoned, needing to find freedom again. The beauty is in the figures and all the emotions they contain, set in the ugliness of a stark and harsh backdrop, which represents the world that these figures live in.

About

Catherine Cavallo

Catherine Cavallo is a contemporary painter who lives and works in Malta. A fully trained artist, she obtained a 1st Class Hons Dip. (City & Guilds - London School of Art). She finds inspiration both in the UK, where she honed her figurative skills, and then in Italy, where her love for landscapes was born, before returning home to Malta. Based in St. Paul’s Bay, her work is rooted in observations of the everyday, and inspired by the pockets of serenity she looks for amidst the upheavals that life presents. Her evocative figurative compositions are inspired both from life in Malta as well as from current world situations. Her preferred method is oil paint applied with a palette knife, though she also enjoys working in mixed media on treated grounds.
