Antoine Farrugia

Medium: Franka and Żonqor Globigerina

Size: 88 cm x 8 cm x 40 cm

Year: 2018

Artwork Description: Patinated ‘Franka’ on ‘Żonqor’ - the sculptures by Antoine Farrugia in many cases originate from pieces of stone – mostly Globigerina Limestone – which has been discarded and sometimes even thrown away in the countryside. While on his walks, it happens many times that he spots such stones, and immediately sees something beautiful hidden inside. And that is how most of his works originate. This work is a typical work of Antoine’s – an abstract and sensual form.

About

Antoine Farrugia

Antoine Farrugia, was born and lives in Mqabba, Malta. The artist’s primary driving force lies within the limestone medium; its various geological characteristics and pliability provide the momentum to give life to organic, undulating forms. Energy that transcends the material itself, resulting in a personal endeavour to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. Such strength reverberates also in other materials, whether marble or steel, resulting in dynamic and monumental sculptures. The stillness and chastity of his sculptures catapult the viewer into a world of sensual forms that are so reminiscent of Antoine’s oeuvre. He has had five solo exhibitions throughout the years. He participated in numerous collective exhibitions and in two editions of the Mdina Contemporary Art Biennale, 2015 and 2017. He was invited to various international symposia and workshops in Germany and China. His works can be found in private collections and public spaces in Malta and abroad.
