About

VICTOR AGIUS

Victor Agius, an artist based in Gozo, Malta, engages in sculpture, painting, video, performance, and installation. Living near ancient sites like Ġgantija Temples, he explores the island, documenting rituals and gathering materials from construction excavations. Utilizing the local landscape as his primary medium, Agius addresses universal existential themes, focusing on humanity’s connection with the earth for spiritual, ritualistic, and daily purposes. He approaches his work with an archaeological mindset, emphasizing formless matter. Agius’s artistic journey began in his father’s sculpture studio, followed by studies under Harry Alden and eventually graduating from the University of Malta. Further studies in Italy and at Central Saint Martins at the University of the Arts in London, UK, enriched his artistic perspective. For a number of years, he was engaged as a visiting lecturer at the University of Malta. He is a co-founder of Ars Vitae Ensemble. Agius has exhibited his works locally at prominent venues and internationally in galleries across Europe such as the European Ceramics Context Ceramic Biennale in Denmark, Premio Faenza in Italy, and Galleria Eduardo Secci in Florence, amongst others. In 2019, his Art in Public Spaces project, Ħaġarna, was inaugurated in Xagħra, Gozo, featuring a performance involving the artist and the local community.
