Medium: Etching

Size: 14x23.5cm

Year: 2019

Artwork Description: What inspired the artist to produce this work is the aesthetic fine harmony existing between the medieval church architecture and the nineteenth-century statue of St Gregory by Salvatore Dimech. The cubic forms that constitute the structure of the church, crowned by a low red painted dome, act as a background to the massive, static, limestone sculpture on its high plinth - a masterpiece in the Nazarene’s visual language. The trees in the middle-ground balance the horizontal masses and complement the vertical movement created by St Gregory in the foreground, while their irregular shapes create a vibrant note to an otherwise static composition. The etching relies on simple hatched lines, thus stressing the monumentality of the works of art represented in their contextual environment.
